Gerwig Talks That “Barbie” Snyder Cut Joke

Warner Bros. Pictures

It has been two years since the fans of the Zack Snyder-verse of DC films got their wish with the release of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” on HBO Max. The fandom remains very much out there and vocal on occasion when they want to be heard.

That could include this weekend as discussions are already swirling online about Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie, now in cinemas, which includes a quick throwaway joke about the recut “Justice League”.

At one point in the movie, one of the Barbies (played by Alexandra Shipp) is brought out of a trance and responds to how she feels with the line: “it’s like I’ve been in a dream where I was really invested in the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League.”

It’s a benign zinger, and Gerwig recently explained the joke to ComicBook.com who asked about that line and about potentially upsetting that fanbase:

“I didn’t even really realize that. I didn’t even… Because I don’t have a dog in this fight, I didn’t even really know. I knew it was a thing. I don’t know the contours of all the ins and outs. But it’s the kind of thing that I vaguely know.

But I think that was the thing, that it was like if [Writer Barbie] had a vague knowledge of, and then all of a sudden, in a certain state, it really meant a lot to her and then it went away.”

The same segment in the film also includes a not-dissimilar joke about Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather”, so it’s good company to be in. Will this still upset the Snyder fans at large? It certainly hasn’t upset the box-office as “Barbie” is headed for massive numbers.
