Selena Gomez cast as Linda Ronstadt in Biopic
Selena Gomez has been cast as Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biographic film about the American singer. After being in the running for the lead role for months, Selena Gomez has officially landed the role.
An inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Linda Ronstadt is the winner of an ALMA Award, an Emmy Award, two Academy of Country Music awards, three American Music Awards, and 11 Grammy Awards. “Ronstadt has released 24 studio albums and 15 compilation or greatest hits albums. She charted 38 US Billboard Hot 100 singles. Twenty-one of those singles reached the top 40, ten reached the top 10, and one reached number one (“You’re No Good”).” Ronstadt has “sold more than 100 million records, making her one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time.”
After an initial and devastating diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in 2011, it was later deduced that Linda Ronstadt instead had the neurodegenerative disease progressive supranuclear palsy. The disease left Ronstadt without the ability to sing. In 2013, Ronstadt published her autobiography, Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir.
The Selena Gomez-starring biofilm will be based on Simple Dreams. The unnamed biopic is currently in pre-production. John Boylan, Linda Ronstadt’s manager for many years, and James Keach are co-producing the film.
Selena Gomez, a note-worthy singer in her own right, and Linda Ronstadt are both of Mexican descent. Gomez will be able to tap into her singing ability and shared heritage in her portrayal of Ronstadt.
There is no word yet on which studio will be handling U.S. distribution for the film, who will direct the film, co-star, or when the film will be released.
