Jack Black Cast in Another Video Game Adaptation

Funnyman Jack Black will be playing opposite Jason Momoa in Warner Bros.’ upcoming video game adaptation of Minecraft.

It looks like another video game adaptation is in the works for comic actor Jack Black. He will be back on the big screen (hopefully in human form this time) after voicing Bowser and singing the hysterical original song, “Peaches” in 2023’s animated hit, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Black is no stranger to working with director Jared Hess. The paid made the wacky 2006 comedy, Nacho Libre, together. Next up for Hess and Black is the film based on the video game smash, Minecraft.

Black has been cast in the very crucial role of Steve in the upcoming Minecraft picture which also stars two heavy-hitters who are headlining two different Warner Bros. box-office hits at the present moment, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Color Purple. Those stars are of course, Jason Momoa and Danielle Brooks. While Momoa’s exact role in the action is still undefined, Brooks will be playing Dawn in the live-action version of the very popular Minecraft video games. Emma Myers is also attached to the forthcoming Minecraft picture. Myers is one of the stars of the wildly popular Netflix series, “Wednesday.”

It is going to be a very busy couple of years for Black when one considers that he has an animated sequel coming out this March, Kung Fu Panda 4. The comedic actor, who starred in hits like Shallow Hal and School of Rock from the early 2000’s, is at the height of his career right now when one takes into account the box-office sensation from last year which was The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That video game characters-based picture earned a golden $574 million at the domestic box-office and bagged a total of $1.3 billion when factoring in international grosses. It also received a glowing “A” CinemaScore grade.

When looking at the past work of Hess, it seems like he is the perfect director for a movie like Minecraft which is likely to be offbeat and intriguing. Hess also previously helmed a comedy called Napoleon Dynamite back in 2004 which stunned moviegoers when it hauled $44 million at the domestic box-office on a budget that could certainly have been considered shoestring, both now and then. That film stands as one of the more profitable indie pictures of the year it was released.

Momoa and Black could be a comic dream team in Minecraft. Momoa has some hysterical scenes in the current release, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which has picked up some slack at the box-office after a lackluster opening weekend. Black is a natural born goofball even though he has shown a more serious side in films like King Kong and The Holiday. His name may be “Black” but expect his new Minecraft project to see plenty of green when it is released in 2025.
