Though ongoing and repeat business for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” is likely to dominate the box-office for the next few weeks, that doesn’t mean there’s not plenty of room for other films it seems.
Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” pulled in $3.1 million in previews and is on its way to a $25-30 million weekend this weekend, however it’s next week when things get interesting.
Next week sees both “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and “Meg 2: The Trench” opening in cinemas, the former getting an early start on Wednesday.
Box-Office Pro has unveiled projections for both films with the ‘Ninja Turtles’ set to take in anywhere between $27-36 million over the weekend, and between $37-49 million for the Wednesday to Sunday five-day stretch.
If accurate that puts the film in the same ballpark as 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” which debuted to $35.3 million on its domestic opening weekend before winding up with a worldwide total haul of $384.2 million worldwide.
Combined with stellar reviews and a cost-effective budget said to be in the $70-80 million range, the film looks like it could well be a good performer for Paramount Pictures.
Meanwhile “The Meg” sequel sees the giant prehistoric shark ready to take a three-day bite of around $26-35 million. That’s a solid start, though notably behind the $45.4 million debut of the first film.
Both are looking to have healthier starts than rest of August’s releases with long forecast projections for both “Gran Turismo” and “Blue Beetle” coming in under $20 million and for “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” coming in under $10 million.
