Oscar-winning “Parasite” and “Memories of Murder” director Bong Joon-ho returns next year with the sci-fi feature “Mickey 17” which has already been shot and is getting some finishing touches put on it.

That’s not the only project he has cooking right now, as previously it was revealed he intends to dip his toes into the animated realm with a movie about deep-sea creatures.

Now, Variety (via The Playlist) has confirmed that famed German filmmaker Werner Herzog will lend his iconic voice to the project.

Herzog has done plenty of onscreen acting in the likes of “The Mandalorian” and “Jack Reacher” and voice acting in shows like “The Simpsons” and “Rick and Morty”. Specifics of his role here are unknown and no other voice roles have been revealed as yet.

What is confirmed is that the mystery movie will be hand-drawn animation, not 3D CG, and it will be loosely inspired by French author Claire Nouvian’s photo book “The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of The Abyss”.

That publication goes on “a voyage into the darkest realms of the ocean” to explore nature’s “oddest and most mesmerizing creatures in crystalline detail”. It contains a ton of color photos of bioluminescent creatures and sea creatures – quite a few of which are photographed for the very first time.

“Mickey 17” will release on January 31st 2025, “The Deep Sea” hasn’t set a date yet.
