“Dragon Ball” Creator Akira Toriyama Dies SuperNayr


Akira Toriyama, the creator of the highly influential “Dragon Ball” franchise, has died. He was 68.

Toriyama suffered an acute subdural hematoma, a bleeding near the brain, and passed away last Friday with the news only being announced today.

Only his family and a few friends attended his funeral according to a statement from the Dragon Ball website. In addition, he had uncompleted works at the time of his death.

“Dragon Ball” debuted in 1984 and became hugely popular around the world – spawning manga, anime, games, films and more.

The comic follows a boy named Son Goku in his quest to collect magical dragon balls to defend Earth against alien humanoids called Saiyans.

It became one of the most successful manga series of all time, with the 42 collected tankōbon volumes selling over 260 million copies worldwide. The numerous anime series, especially “Dragon Ball Z,” is considered one of the most influential – especially in terms of reaching outside of Japan.
