Box-Office: “Kong” King, “Ghostbusters” Slimed SuperNayr

Warner Bros. Pictures

With the numbers still coming in over the holiday around much of the world, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is continuing to exceed expectations both domestically and abroad.

Critics may be mixed, but the monster mash-up nabbed a solid A CinemaScore from audiences and is tracking for a $75 million domestic opening.

That’s only part of the story though. Internationally, it’s also going strong and, if numbers hold up, it could earn an additional $100 million overseas by the end of Easter Sunday – a combined total of $175 million worldwide.

The film is faring quite well in China, with $13.4 million on Friday and $18 million on Saturday and could even reach the $200 million mark should Sunday business prove robust.

Whilst GxK powers on, last week’s $100 million-budgeted “Ghostbusters” sequel has already been spooked. Following a solid $43 million opening weekend last week, the sequel has collapsed to a $14-15 million second weekend – a second-weekend drop of 68%.

As a result, it’s expected the film may not crack the $100 million domestic mark and will come in under 1989’s “Ghostbusters II” which snagged $112 million.
