A Sequel to ROMY AND MICHELE’S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION is a “Go” but the Project Must Wait for its Writer SuperNayr

A Romy and Michele Sequel Awaits its Writer

It was recently announced that Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow will probably be reuniting on screen again for a Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel as the potential production awaits its scribe, Robin Schiff.

“Time After Time,” viewers of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion hope for a sequel. Don’t expect it to get in front of cameras immediately but the news is pretty official. A new sequel to 1997’s Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is in the works to actually happen. Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are negotiating contracts as executive producers but the writer of the first film, Robin Schiff, of The Groundlings fame is too busy with her work on “Emily in Paris” to get started immediately on helping to bring the sequel to the screen.

In 2022, some 25 years after the original film, Kudrow and Sovino got the ball rolling in terms of putting the whole idea of a sequel out there for consideration when the stars appeared at the SAG awards. Now, the news has come out that Schiff is going to complete work on the script for the sequel after she finishes her current responsibilities on “Emily in Paris.”

In the original film, the cleverly conceived characters of Romy and Michele attended their 10-year high school reunion. It was a wildly funny women-led movie that did for female buddy comedy movies what Wayne’s World did for male ones. Only it wasn’t as profitable as Wayne’s World was at the box-office. However, the 1997 original has garnered many fans over the decades since its initial release.

With no script at the present time, everything still feels premature. But, it is going to happen, according to reports. It feels like there is the possibility of Alan Cumming and Janeane Garofalo returning given the way the first film ended but at the present time, there’s no certainty of those stars reprising their supporting roles from the original in the follow-up movie.

Sorvino stated that she wants “heart” to be a part of the sequel and that she wants the main characters to be relatable and lovable but still “dumb.” So, don’t expect the ladies of the film’s title to have gotten their doctorate degrees or anything like that. One wonders if they had kids and it will be interesting to see what the script decides for Romy and Michele when it is completed.

There was a prequel to the 1997 movie called Romy and Michele: In the Beginning from 2005 but it wasn’t as heavily promoted as it could have been. That one was, of course, made for television and the girls seemed to have gotten arrested in it. Katherine Heigl was one of the movie’s stars.

It is most likely undecided whether or not they will make the follow-up to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion that is moving forward a theatrical event or a streaming one. The safer bet would be on the steaming end of the coin although if Sorvino and Kudrow hit it out of the park re-playing their funny roles, anything can happen.
